Finally, MLB!
What happened: According to the New York Post, Major League Baseball and Barstool Sports have discussed potentially airing national midweek games on Barstool’s platforms.
A major focal point of any potential MLB-Barstool broadcast would be in-game gambling.
Why it’s important: Bravo, MLB! If an agreement is actually signed, it will be the smartest business decision the league has made in the past ten years. Here are three reasons why:
Barstool’s primary audience is young people. Guess which age group doesn’t care about baseball anymore? People aged 18-34—only 14% of that group considers themselves to be avid fans, the lowest of any group measured. Barstool’s signature personalities (Dave Portnoy, Big Cat, PFT Commenter) will quickly be able to provide some much needed excitement for the sport.
It’s actually painful to actively watch baseball games without any type of rooting/financial interest. Gambling fixes that problem. Now a college kid can procrastinate by betting on the Royals to win against the White Sox on a random Tuesday afternoon at 2 PM.
Barstool is quickly building a presence in live sports, so the infrastructure to effectively execute on such an agreement will be in place. Recently, the company announced that it would be a title sponsor and broadcaster for college football’s Arizona Bowl.
